Research
Forests play a key role for human livelihoods as well as in combatting global climate change from regional to local scales. Their sustainable management in an era of increasing demands and increasing risks is challenging. Successful, timely and adapted forest management relies on knowledge from multiple disciplines - such as silviculture, forest modelling, economics, decision making, and policy development. Our research draws on knowledge from these disciplines, and focuses on:
- fundamental research regarding the characterization and quantification of forest resources and their development over time (UNDERSTAND)
- the synthesis of disciplinary knowledge towards the development of computer aided decision processes and systems that inform forest management considering the sustainable use of multiple forest resources (FORECAST), and
- communicating new knowledge and information about the dynamic nature of forests across time and space successfully (COMMUNICATE).
